The sound of muffled footsteps echoed faintly — officers moving cautiously within a cordoned-off section of the road. A young constable’s breath clouded in front of him as he adjusted the yellow tape, his boots sloshing through puddles that glimmered in the dim light. The body lay near the curb — a man in his mid-forties, wearing a grey trench coat soaked in rain and blood. His face was oddly calm, his eyes half-open, as if surprised by his own death.
