  PROLOGUE IN REFLECTION The street was nearly empty, washed with the pale aftertaste of midnight. A thin drizzle hung in the air, not quite rain, not quite mist. A boy no older than ten dragged a worn satchel across the cracked pavement, humming to himself. He paused when he saw light seeping through the fractured glass windows of the old mirror shop. Curiosity tugged him forward. Through the glass, he saw it. Dozens of mirrors, tall and small, lay in shards across the wooden floor, glittering faintly in the half-light. The fragments were scattered like fallen stars. But it was the center of the room that froze him. A body. The pale hand of a man stretched outward, fingers curled against a shard of mirror. The face—broken into distorted pieces by reflections—seemed to look in every direction at once. The boy screamed.
