  THE BRIDGE IN RAIN The night was an unfinished symphony of rain and silence. Drops tapped against the old iron railing of the bridge, a rhythm broken only by the occasional whisper of wind across the water. Police lanterns cut through the mist in faint circles of light, illuminating a body sprawled at the very center of the span. Detectives leaned over the corpse of a man in his late forties—an attorney, well known, respected, and despised in equal measure. His tailored coat was darkened by the drizzle, his pale face turned toward the sky as though listening for some verdict from the heavens. Just beside the outstretched hand lay something odd: a small, battered tape recorder, its red light still faintly glowing as if it had just swallowed the last breath of the dead. “Seal the perimeter,” an officer barked, but the bridge itself seemed to obey first, tightening its silence.
